The Pink City

Unable to cope with any more travelling after our marathon tiger adventure we crashed in Jaipur for our remaining 5 days in India. We had originally thought we would push deeper into Rajasthan and had locked in our flights back to Mumbai to coincide with this. Instead we slept, ate and slept. We did fit in a city tour and I had a stroll around the old city bazaars. All in all we got very little done.

Despite counter claims I found Jaipur to be a very unimpressive city. The forts and palaces are pretty to see but generally it wasn’t my bag. Part of the problem was we succumbed to touts to find accommodation and we ended up in a dodgy part of down. The lonely planet warns heavily about gem scams and other things all started by friendly strangers wanting to buy you chai. We experienced this a dozen times. By the end of it I was starting to enjoy it; I would get a free chai, have a chat to a local and as soon as they mentioned gems in passing, laugh and exclaim I wouldn’t go near gems as everyone had heard of the scams. For the most part that was our last meeting.
