Just after the Costa Rica/Nicaragua border is Isla de Ometepe. This island in Lake Nicaragua is densely forested and has two volcanoes at either end. As the ferry approaches and you see the volcanoes reaching into the clouds it looks exactly like the Island of Dr. Monroe.
This seems to be a great place to see similar things (volcanoes, wildlife, rainforest & cloud forest) at a fraction of the price of Costa Rica. We were volcanoed out so we spent our time lazing in Hammocks and catching up on sleep. We also met a group of Nica’s who were down from Managua for the Independence Day weekend. We had a great time hanging out with them. On the last day we hiked 12km to “Ojo de Agua” which ended up being nothing more than a large outdoor pool fed by volcanic springs.
